Hello friends and especially to all the super mom’s out there!!!

Today we have come up with another simple and easy science experiment but this time not only science we can call it as ‘Edible Science Experiment’. Yes!! Today I am going to post “How to make Homemade Butter”. Try this activity with your kids. It’s really fun and will fascinate all ages of children.

What tastes better than a homemade butter!!? Whether you spread it on a bread or roll it on a roti for dinner, taste of butter by our hands is always top the line. Show this old fashioned fun activity for kids and they will really enjoy churning your own butter at home. Children of any age can understand and more than watching kids enjoy doing this activity.

Homemade butter is made in a variety of different ways and today we are going to learn or make homemade butter using basic household supplies. Let us see what they are!!

Making Homemade Butter

One traditional and classic butter making process is by using a bit of muscle. Hahaha!! Confused!? Yes, we are going to make butter in a jar by shaking it using your muscle strength. It is so simple, fun and easily accessible activity for kids and also improves your child’s motor skills.

Who is it for
This is a cool science activity that is suitable for primary school kids (5-6 year olds) or kindergarteners (3-4 year olds). But that shouldn’t stop you if you have older kids. It is an Yummy activity that can be done by kids of all ages.

Things you need to make tasty Butter

Things We Need for making butter

  • One cup of heavy and fresh whipping cream
  • Clean and tight sealed glass jar with lid. Baby food jars (that have lid) work best if you are preferring to do with the small batches. Whereas a canning jar with a lid, seal and ring works great for larger batches. A different size glass jars could be used for the purpose but the amount of fresh whipping cream should be adjusted accordingly.
  • A clean glass bowl

Preparation

  • Take one cup of fresh cream into a cup or glass bowl. Let it settle to the room temperature (suggested to leave it for five hours in the bowl).
  • Make sure all the glass containers we are going to in the activity are clean and clear.

Steps to Making Butter from Fresh Cream

1) Once the fresh cream is settled for five hours, pour it directly into a clean glass jar. Put the lid on the jar and screw it on tightly.

2) For the next step, you may want to get a helping hand ready for shaking the jar. My daughters helped me while shaking and they both took turns to shake it. This is the only step where we need to put little efforts to take out butter. It will take several minutes of vigorous shaking to make butter from the cream! Shake it until the sloshing sound stops.

3) After few minutes, the fresh cream will thicken and the sloshing sound stops too.

4) About the half way through, you may stop shaking and open the lid to show your kids what’s happening inside the jar.

5) The fresh in the jar has just turned into a whipped cream. My younger couldn’t control herself from tasting it.

6) Place the lid back on and keep shaking until the sloshing sound stops again. This sloshing sound is because of the butter milk separating from the butter.

7) Almost we are done, shake the jar for few more minutes and take the lid off. You can see the solid mass inside the jar which is nothing but our yummy and tasty homemade butter.

8) Pour off the butter milk out of the jar using a strainer into an empty cup.

9) Here we go!! The most awaited homemade light and fluffy butter is ready to slather on your toast, bread etc. Flavour your butter with a pinch of salt and chopped herbs to make your toast tastier.

OBSERVATIONS

Before you start shaking, note down the time or put your stop watch on to take note on how long does it take to make butter out of fresh cream.

Now we jump into our second easy way of making butter at home as I already promised you in the beginning that I will tell you the three different methods.

Using Hand Beater

Were your hands paining? Let’s make the activity little more simpler.   We are going to replace our bottle movement with a beater. 

Procedure

Step-1

Do the preparation same as we did in the first method of making homemade butter. (Bringing the fresh cream to room temparature).

Step-2

Take a cup of fresh cream into the jar and beat it with your hands. That is the reason I said ‘you need to invest your energy to make tasty homemade butter. 🙂

Beat the butter using beater until the liquid separates out and a solid mass is formed. The solid mass is nothing but our yummy butter. Nothing can beat the taste of homemade butter in this world.

This recipe is for unsalted butter. If you want salted butter, you can add required salt to the fresh cream itself before you start beating it.

Separate the butter from the glass jar and knead it for some time so that you can save the butter from getting rancid.

Now it’s time for our third method – Let’s use motorized beater. 

This method saves your energy while making homemade butter. Hahaha!! Yes, in this recipe you can use electronic beater to whip the cream.

    Procedure

    1) Pour a cup of fresh cream into a clean and clear glass jar and start beating it. This time you can beat the cream using electronic beater.

    2) Beat the cream until the sloshing sound made by the separating liquid stops.

    3) After sometime you can see butter separating from the butter milk in the glass bowl.

    4) Take out our fluffy butter from glass bowl into a cup and keep it under cold water in order to remove excess water from the butter.

    Now our fresh homemade butter is ready to consume. It is very easy to make and saves your money than buying expensive butter from the stores.

    How long can you store the homemade butter?

    You can store homemade butter for 3-5 days at certain room temperature and 7-10 days if refrigerated. Make sure to store it with the lid on. The liquid that is formed while making butter is also can be stored in the fridge for 5-8 days.

    TIP: If you want to speed up the churning process, add some marbles to your glass jar before beating the cream. This works as an agitator and help churn the butter a bit faster.

    Science Facts Behind Butter Making

    What is the science behind making butter?

    When shaking the fresh cream, the fat molecules in the cream get shaken out of position and clump together. Eventually, after enough agitation, the fat molecules that are clumped so much forms butter. During this process, the fat molecules gets separated from the liquid in the cream, and this liquid is called buttermilk and can be removed.

    Why does shaking cream make butter?

    Cream is nothing but the milk fat, a complex mixture of lipids gets stabilized by its own fat molecules. When the cream is stirred up, the fat molecules all together forms a clump leaving the water molecules since fat hates water. 

    Does heavy cream turn to butter?

    Yes, heavy cream absolutely turn into butter. When the cream is agitated, the fat molecules get shaken out of position and clump together forming butter.

    Can you turn half and half into butter?

    Unfortunately, half and half won’t work as a substitute since it contains very less content of fat to whip. 

    How much cream does it take to make a pound of butter?

    We will get about half as much butter as the amount of cream used (when shaking). For example: One quart (32 ounces) of Heavy Cream will yield 1 pound (16 ounces) butter plus about 2 cups buttermilk.

    Can you turn butter into cream?

    Yes, the butter can be turned into cream. Butter should be melted and mixed with the butter milk again to make cream. We can also turn butter into cream by mixing butter with whole milk. 

    What is the difference between butter and whipped cream?

    Both cream and butter are dairy products (means they are derived from the cow’s milk) and closely related. Cream is high source of butter fat where as butter is a semi solid form of cream. However, butter is higher in fat than cream.  

    Is making butter a chemical change?

    Yes, the cream goes through a physical change when it is churned into butter. The fat molecules clumped together while stirring or shaking causing the liquid (water molecules) to be squeezed out of the solid mass (butter). This physical change is absolutely reversible. The butter can be melted and mixed with buttermilk to make cream again.

    How to Start Fire with a Magnifying Glass?

    Starting a fire with magnifying glass is going to thrill your kids. Science is everywhere!! Today let us see the science around us along with our kids in a closer view. Huh!! Closer look!? Yes, also I give you a perfect chance to improve your kid’s motor skills. 

    Kids are naturally curious and love to explore the world around them!! But this time we are going to give them a magnifying lens to enhance their learning experience in a better and closer view.

    This is one of my favorite learning experiences remembered my childhood days playing with magnifying lens.

    At this point, I told them about the activity I am going to show them i.e. ‘Creating fire with magnifying glasses. “Wow!! Mamma are you serious!? Are we going to make fire using this magical glass!? It’s really exciting mamma, lets us start immediately”. You can expect these words are from my two girls. Let us enter the world of magnifying glass without any delay and lit some fire!! 🙂

    That’s it, we require only three simple materials to do this fun filled science experiment.

    Starting Fire From Magnifying Glass

    I took my daughters to our apartment balcony on a bright sunny day to demonstrate. 

    1) Ask your kid to show some drawing skills on the white paper. My younger one drew a smiley face using her sketches on the white paper. Let your kids draw any shape to have fun on the paper as well.

    2) Select a safe location (where the fire cannot spread to anything else since you need to perform the activity outdoor) to make fire using magnifying glass.

    3) Now hold the magnifying glass between your white paper and the sun. My elder one is interested to hold the magnifying glass. She already applied sunscreen lotion to avoid sun burns. So, apply some sunscreen lotion to your children before you go out for sun.

    4) As soon as the magnifying glass is under the sun focusing on the paper, it gives a bright dot on the paper. You can make the dot size bigger by tilting the lens back and forth. Keep in mind that keep the dot size as small as possible in order to create the fire sooner.

    5) Ask the kid to focus the dot in one place for about few seconds to minutes. Slowly you can observe some smoke from the focused area. Then the fire comes slowly after smoke appears.

    My kids focused on eyes and mouth part of the smiley face they have drawn on the white paper. They were amazed seeing the fire using magnifying glass. They enjoyed peeping out of the eyes of the smiley face as they made holes by creating fire with the lens glass. They hugged and thank me for showing them such a wonderful act.

    Put off the fire as soon as its purpose is served.    

    We even went to our garden to try out with dried leaves. It worked so fool-proof that leaves in our garden started burning. Trust me, no exaggeration. The dried leaves lying around caught fire. I stopped there but was really feeling awesome by the way it worked. You need a magnifying glass which can be purchased but they are not expensive. Be very careful on a sunny day to prevent any accidents. Ensure not to leave the glass outside without knowledge. Also, do not allow kids to handle alone.

     

    The Science Behind It

    The unique properties of magnifying glass is the magic trick behind creating a fire using magnifying glass. Wondered to know what those unique properties are!!? Let us begin.

    We already learned about what is magnifying glass and how it makes things look bigger. Coming to our experiment, the science behind creating a fire using magnifying glass is found in the form of photons. Photons are just the particles that carry or holds the clear visible light from the sun to the earth. They transmit light and energy in the form of heat. A magnifying glass sets fire by focusing all the photons through the small dot area created by the convex (curved outward) lens. When the sun fall on the magnifying glass, the appropriate focal strength of the photons passes through the lens and creates a small sized dot on the ignitable material. This generates an extremely high heat concentration at the dot area which is good enough to start a fire. This is time taking process and you need to wait until the sun light catches fire.

    The convex lens can be found in many devices we are aware of. Ex: binoculars, camera, even glass bottle bottoms etc.

    Tip

    • A water droplet on the lens intensifies the sun light’s heat causes the fire to ignite more quickly.
    • The larger the lens, the easier to create a fire on any flammable material.

    Tisha was 3 years old when I tried this experiment. Don’t think skeptical about this. You can teach kids about making a fire in your garden with this experiment.  Let me warn you to take care of kids. Please make sure if your kid is appropriate to take part in this experiment. However, I know that my kids will not overboard on things and will check with me. Also, I will explain to them about the hazards caused in advance. Hence I am very confident to do any experiment with my kids. I will also tell them few conditions and only if they abide by we will do that particular work. It is easy to handle my little ones. You can also ensure safety before starting not only this activity but others too posted in this site.

    Here are some key questions that you can discuss with your young scientists. 

    Can you really start a fire with glasses?

    Yes, we can create the fire using any type of glasses that have convex lens. All you need to create a fire is convex lens to focus the sun light to a small area or specific spot. The devices that fall under this category are binoculars, eye glasses, magnifying glasses etc. Even the ice is used the purpose since it has a curved shape similar to the convex lens. A mirror glass can also create the fire since it produces heat but it takes a long time to ppoduce fire. Convex lens direct the sun ray’s to a specific point thus responsible for ignition.  

    What starts fire when you show magnifying glass in sun?

    A magnifying glass makes fire with the help of heat from the sun. This is done by focusing the glass for 50-60 seconds under the sun. The sun rays pass through the lens of the glass focusing the heat at one specific and small point where the fire begins after producing some smoke.  

    Can you start a fire with a flashlight and a magnifying glass?

    Yes, we can create a fire with a flash light and magnifying glass but this likely will not work since the flashlight produces very less intensity of heat. You need to use two magnifying glasses to create a thin laser light beam of heat rays in order to set fire. You can use paper, dry grass and dry twigs to set fire as they have access to catch the fire easily. However, the results are not guaranteed. 

    How do you make a fire without matches?

    A magnifying glass is the great way to start the fire without matches. During unfavorable conditions, this is the best method to survive. Regardless of how you start your fire, always carry tinder (it should be dry) along with you. Making fire using flint ans steel is one of the easiest ways to set fire. You can use a mirror or a water-filled balloon instead of magnifying glass to create fire in the absence of matches. One of the most famous and most difficult ways to create fire by friction. It is followed in olden days by our ancestors. In this way, you can create fire in different ways.

    What happens when light passes through magnifying glass?

    When light passes through magnifying glass, the convex lens refract or bend the light rays causing the light trays come together. This makes our eyes see things in a different way than the original ones. When the light rays fall on an object and reflect the image to your eyes by travelling in a parallel direction. These parallel rays when passes through a magnifying glass, the convex lens bend the parallel rays and bring them together causing a virtual image on the retina of your eyes. This virtual image appears larger than the real ones.

    What lens does a magnifying glass use?

    A magnifying glass uses convex lens usually mounted in a frame with a handle making it portable and easy to use. The convex lens is something that bends the light passing through it. Bending of light causes virtual images. 

    How do magnifying glasses burn things?

    The convex lens in the magnifying glass causes things burn. The double convex lens in the magnifying glass focuses the beam of heat rays at one single point. Concentrating the energy at a single point causing a flammable object to set fire. 

    Can you make magnifying glass fire without sun?

    To create a fire, all you need to focus on how much energy you are focusing on the size of the area. The convex lens know how to do this. Sure, you can absolutely use laser light to create fire without sun. Laser light is a monochromatic light makes the purpose easy since we do not need to worry about the aberration of lens. Any source of light that has as much energy as sunlight will serve the purpose. 

    Do magnifying glasses work underwater?

    Usually, the regular and normal magnifying glass does not work under water. Because the refractive index of magnifying glass is equal (almost equal) to the refractive index of the water. Hence, the magnification power of magnifying glass is lost under water since there is no or a little refraction.

    If I am not wrong you actually don’t allow your kid to touch any type of glasses including magnifying glass. 🙂 I knew the reason as well, we all think that glasses hurt while playing but anything handled with care and also under proper guidance we can reduce such risks to our kids.

    Exploring nature and science with the magnifying glass is so much fun for pre-school children and also attracts adults too irrespective of their age. Exploring with magnifying glass provides children an amazing platform where they can explore things in finer detail, and helps to make sense of world as well as extends their thinking power and motor skills. To top it off, using magnifying glass benefits kids to get exposed to optical technology.

    When I first got the lens into my home, I just couldn’t stop my two kid’s anxiety and happiness. In fact, they both started fighting for one so later I had to buy one more. Uffff! Still I am happy to show them how we can set fire using magnifying glass.

    First teach them how to handle magnifying glass as we are dealing with glasses and lens. Tell them all the necessary precautions to be taken while dealing with glasses.

    Ask them to see their hands, skin, eyes, and the nature around them through magnifying glass. Tell them to observe carefully at everything that is present around them and ask them to notice the change in the size of anything or object. My kids are very much excited seeing things in a bigger view including small insects and tiny objects. This is the great way to explore the simple science around them in a simple way.     Yes, absolutely!! Not only a Halloween, any formal cocktail event or birthday party is an ideal set up to show off glowing ice cubes. What are you waiting for? Light up the night with the awesome fluorescent, glowing science fun!

    Glowing Ice Cubes Glow Science For Kids

    I planned to try this glowing ice cubes setting much before my younger one’s (5 years old) birthday party. As a parent I am very much happy seeing the kids happy and excited. But before arranging this setting in the party, I already had a try along with my little ones to check and explain the science behind it.

    So let us see what happens with the activity and learn some fun science at home using some magical ingredients that are available at home.

    Glowing ice cubes are easy to make and safe to do this activity for kids. It is also safe to consume as well since it is non-toxic and edible. My girls liked the taste of tonic water (and of course, your kids may feel different about it). Though the taste discourages them, it is a great sensory play material for kids as it is safe in case if the kids decide to taste the tonic water.

    Hence, this particular activity has become one of my and my daughter’s favorite activities. This is simple enough for kids to do, but also super cool enough to entertain everyone.

    Who is it for
    Since this is a sensory play and edible activity, this is highly suitable for toddlers.  In addition, preschoolers will also love to play with ice cubes. They will even be excited to see the glowing ice cubes under UV light.

    Don’t stress yourself if kids don’t understand the chemistry behind this activity. This could very well work as a sensory play for the kids of all ages. Kids aged more than 5 years would be able to understand the concept easily.  

    Things required to perform the experiment

    Have you ever surprised that you could make something that glows at home and how glow-in-the-dark things work? It’s not that difficult or hard to do—all you need is a magical ingredient as I told you in the beginning. Yes, i.e. nothing but tonic water. How will the tonic water works to glow the cubes? Try this activity to know the answers for the questions rotating in your mind.

    Steps to make glow in the dark ice cubes

    Step-1

    We wanted to compare the glow of normal water and the tonic water. So we prepared ice cubers in two different trays.

    Take some normal water in a beaker and ask your kid to fill in the ice tray. Place the filled ice tray in the freezer until the water could turn into cubes. 

    Repeat the same step for tonic water as well.

    Tonic water ice cubes turned out to have a textured structure while normal water ice cubes were more transparent.

    Step-2

    Since we wanted to do more than just tonic water, we added food color to both tonic water and normal water. I let my elder daughter add color to the water and pour in the ice tray and freeze.

    Step-3

    To create another variation, I choose a fluorescent paint. (Caution : I used acrylic paint since I couldn’t get fluorescent food color. Acrylic paints are not edible. At any cost, children should not be let to taste the ice cubes mixed with acrylic paints) I suggest you to go for food color to make the activity completely edible. I asked my kid again to fill this mixture into the ice tray and freeze.

    We marked the tray at the back using a marker just to distinguish which ones were made from tonic water. 

    Once all the liquids are frozen, take out all the ice cubes made of different mixtures using normal water into separate bowls as shown in the figure.

    Step-4

    This step is little boring for you I guess!!! 🙂 But not for our kids hopefully. They are always excited and active to do mixing of different substances. This also helps their little brain to understand the concept of measuring the substances in right quantities and mixing the substances in a right way. It would be like a practice session on mixing different mixtures.

    Coming to our step-4; repeat the above three steps but this time we need to make cubes using our magical ingredient i.e. nothing but ‘tonic water’.

    Hope you all understand the preparation steps before we get into the activity. My girls are ready with cubes made of tonic water and normal water mixed with food color and fluorescent fabric color. You can follow the figures (how my girls have arranged the ice cube containing bowls to perform the experiment) we have uploaded along with this post.

    Step-5

    All you need to do in step-5 is so simple and effortless. Just turn off the lights and flash some black light onto the ice cubes. Now turn on the black light. The ice cubes will start glowing.

    Mamma! Tonight we are going to have a parrrrtyyyyy… Yeyyy!!! How could mamma make such an amazing thing even at home!?? You can expect who said these words. Yes, my girls were very excited seeing the glowing cubes. They are also excited to know the reason behind it. Without any delay or before their mood switches, I started explaining them the simple science and secret behind this activity.

    Here are our results

    As expected, the glow on the tonic water was much brighter than the normal ice cubes.  In fact, we could clearly see the texture of the tonic water ice cubes when they were glowing.

    On the contrary to our expectation, among the fluorescent paint mixed ice cubes, the normal water ones were brighter. I believe the tonic water didn’t mix well with the acrylic paint as we could see patches of the paint across the ice cubes. That might be a reason.

    The food colored ice cubes were so dull. We actually decided not to use any food color to make ice cubes for the birthday party. 

    I allowed my daughter to play and taste the ice cubes (of-course – except the fluorescent paint mixed ones). They even explored it further testing the ice cubes with normal flashlight.

    Science behind the Glowing Ice Cubes Activity

    Our magical ingredient ‘tonic water’ contains a highly fluorescent compound nothing but ‘Quinine’. Even a small quantity of quinine in the tonic water makes the things glow in the dark. But you will need a black light because this is how you can make things glow by screwing black light.

    What happens here is; the fluorescent compound quinine absorbs the ultraviolet (UV) light (nothing but black light), which is generally invisible to the human eye, and then emits it back at a visible wavelength. So basically, the invisible light goes into the ice cube, and comes back out as visible light. Cool!

    Currently I have used LED UV torch as my black light, but there are lots of different ones available in the market that suit your budget, so have a look around and get it. I really like the idea of the torch ones too…)

    This is one of the fun and cool science activities which is perfect to introduce for younger kids around 5 years. You will also get the chance to introduce some new words (like liquid, fluoresce, ultraviolet etc.) to your kid’s vocabulary in a fun and playful way.

    Some Q&A to kindle interest in the subject

    What makes tonic water glow in the dark?

    The answer is amazingly so simple: Tonic water actually contains the chemical fluorescent compound quinine, which fluoresces under certain ultraviolet or black light and that makes tonic water glow.

    Does tonic water glow in the dark without a black light?

    Yes, tonic water can glow without black light but only when exposed to a blue or purple LED (light emitting diode) light. 

    Does frozen tonic water glow in the dark?

    No – Frozen tonic water glows only when exposed to UV light. 

    Does diet tonic water glow?

    Yes, perfectly glows!! It doesn’t make any difference whether you use regular or diet tonic water, just make sure the label on the tonic water bottle lists quinine.

    What is tonic water good for?

    Tonic water is nothing but a soft drink containing chemical quinine (which gives a bitter taste to the tonic water). Some people believe that quinine is a common treatment for malaria and also helps with restless legs syndrome and leg cramps. However, there is no scientific evidence verifying this belief.

    What is the best tonic water?

    Fentimans, Fever Tree, and Schweppes are now making the entire line of tonic waters.

    We used a low powered UV light (black light torch) to do this activity.  UA A-light (low powered UV light) is not harmful and can be viewed without any protection.  They generally do not cause any harm. However, I would suggest do not expose this light directly to eyes. So watch over your kids when they play with the black light torch (if you have one). 

    In addition, as described in the article, do not use acrylic fluorescent paint when you try this activity at your home. acrylic paints are not edible. You can get fluorescent food colors which can be used to make glowing ice cubes that are edible too. 

    Finally, all the activities in this blog require adult supervision. Do not let your kids do these activities alone. Being around them encourages them to explore more while avoiding unnecessary accidents. Read here for more information.

    Today we are going to learn about some simple physics by doing simple and easy science activity i.e. Refraction of light.

    This activity is so quick and I really wondering how I missed this experiment this long to explain or show my kids and make them Wowww!! This is one among the 10 min STEAM activity. This activity is perfect for 5-7 years old kids (since they are in budding stage to understand physics), however all the kids can understand the science behind light refraction. Children under 5 years may not understand the science but they will enjoy the experiment results. The best part is, it is an experiment which is listed under experiments done with items available at home

    As mentioned it is suitable for all kids. However, 5-7 year-old kids can understand the science behind this. These children will know light and can relate to refraction. Smaller ones will enjoy but may not understand the details and the concept.

    In the beginning, my daughters were like scratching their heads and saying “what Mamma!! What are you going to do only with a glass of water”? “We don’t find much ingredients except water which is boring!!” There is a reason why kids were disappointed seeing the ingredients because this experiment or activity is so quick and best part is that it does not need much ingredients. In addition, this activity doesn’t need much set up as well since we can set it up within minutes.

    But after seeing the magic that light does in water, my kids were amazed. Let us see what made them surprised in this activity.

    What is refraction of light?

    When light travels from one transparent medium (air) to another transparent medium (water), the speed of the light slows down and when it hits water it changes its direction slightly. This change in the direction of light is known as refraction of light. In a simple language, light refraction is bending of light. This looks simple and easy but it is unusual.

    Experiment  Steps : Refraction of Light

    Step-1

    Firstly, ask your kids to fill the glass jar carefully with the clean and clear water. Here I tried to fool my kids saying that I have given them a magical liquid to fill. My younger one (5 year old) is almost in my trap but not my elder one (7 years old). She laughed at me and said ‘hey! Don’t fool me mom, it is just water’! Lollll…

    Step-2

    Get a piece of paper and ask your kid to draw an arrow. Let the kids draw the arrow in any direction (any direction of arrow works out) and hold it vertically.

    Step-3

    Now place the water filled jar in front of the paper (exactly focusing) just before the arrow. Adjust the glass jar between the glass and the arrow on the paper until the image (arrow) can be seen clearly through the glass.

    Step-4

    Ask your kids to come in front of the glass jar and see what happens. Here ask them a few questions like ‘what did they observe’, is there any direction changes’, if the answer is yes (from kids), then ask for any clues or reasons to explain why it happened.

    (You can have a debate session by gathering your kid’s friends as well. Having debate sessions improve their communication skills, speaking skills in public as well as builds confidence).

    Coming to our activity, in step 4 you can watch the arrow appearing in reverse direction through the glass jar. This is just amazing and pretty surprising right!!

    Now, my younger daughter took a paper and showed her drawing skills as well by drawing a small cat to check again through the water. J She is totally in wow mood seeing her cat in reverse direction through the water.

    In this way, you can ask your kids to observe the light refraction concept through a glass of water by trying different graphic design papers. We have tried some graphic zebra lines, round shaped dots, and some curved lines to observe the light refraction.

    The secret that made the experiment work is “Refraction”. As I already told you, refraction is bending of light as it passes from one medium to another medium. Ex: Air to Water or Water to Air.

    In our experiment, the light wave traveled from the image (arrow) into the water crossing the glass cup and finally traveled out of the glass cup and again into the air and reached our eyes. Here, water acts as a magnifying glass which makes light more concentrated towards the focal point (near to the center). When the light ray goes beyond this focal point (to come out of the glass jar in order to reach our eyes) the image looks reversed. That means, the light on the left direction is now changes to right direction.

    Here are some concepts that you can teach to your kids.. 

    How is refraction demonstrated in light?

    Refraction is manifested as bending of light as it passes from one transparent medium to another. Here, the light wave or ray passes from air to glass and back to air before it reaches our eye lens. The bending is caused due to differences in density between the two mediums. When the light passes from more dense medium to less dense medium, the light refracts in reverse direction and vice versa.

    Why does an arrow change direction behind a glass of water?

    When the arrow (behind the glass) is observed at a particular distance, it looks like it is reversed itself. Actually what happens is when light travels from one medium to another, it is proved that it can bend or refract. During the experiment, the light initially traveled from the air, through the glass, through the water and comes out to reach our eyes crossing again the same mediums. Anytime that light passes from one medium, or material, into another, it refracts. while crossing the medium the light ray goes beyond the focal point (near to the center) which causes the arrow change its direction.

    The transmission of light between any two transparent media results in a change in both the speed and wavelength of the wave. The light wave speeds up or slows down and transforms into a wave with a larger or a shorter wavelength along with change in direction when it passes through the boundary of two media.

    We decided to make fireworks at home. Did you hear it right? Yes, you did. At home DIY explosives. But do not panic as they are as safe to make and can be played by little ones. In addition, you could teach density science to kids.

    Does that sound exciting? 

    We decided to make two difference density science experiments to teach my daughters. Believe me, you will become a kid when you see the results. You will start loving to do this quite often. We did not buy any expensive things but used only the items available at home. The best part – you can do both these experiments in less than ten minutes. 

    Let’s start with the first one.

    Clouds are always sound interesting and mysterious too for kids especially pre-schoolers. Today let’s clear the question marks on our kid’s faces when they see clouds and rain with our density science experiment.

    This is a super fun and simple experiment to explain kids about the clouds formation and rain. Just fascinate our kids by bringing clouds and rain to our home since we cannot bring the real clouds though. Do not worry about the things we need to do this experiment.     Instructions on How to create fireworks 

    Step-1 :  Begin this activity by simply asking your child to fill the glass container we have taken. Make sure not to fill it completely and ask to leave some space (about an inch from the rim).

    Step-2 : Now the exciting part to the kids is adding shaving cream 🙂 .  But,  kids need to be very careful while adding shaving cream on top of the water filled glass cup. Make sure not to add more shaving cream or do not make it thick since it takes very long time for the rain to fall. Also, waiting is the boring thing for kids while doing the experiment. So, do not make it too high.

    Here, the water in the glass cup represents atmosphere and the shaving cream is the cloud.

    Step-3 : Ask your kid to drop few drops of food colour to the foam already added to the water in the glass cup. Here, you can use a syringe or eye dropper to drop the food colour closer to the edge of the glass cup so that it falls quickly.

    We need to wait for few minutes to see such a beautiful and exciting rain like effect because it depends on the size and thickness of the cloud.

    Ask your kids to observe carefully!! The weight of the food colour or dye slowly starts to push the foam or cloud and falls down through the water creating a pretty and cool rain like effect. It doesn’t resemble the droplets like real rain but it gives something more like streaks of rain falling. BeautifulJ

    At this point, you can take advantage and start discussion with your kids on colours and colour mixing. This helps to develop motor skills in your kids.

     Tisha and Pritika loved trying this experiment with different colours and glass cups. They enjoyed watching streams of different food colouring fall like droplets through the foam and then swirl around the water. They also have some great questions but found it lovely experience. J

    Science is always exciting, wonderful and fun for curious children and my children are not less to fall under that category to keep on trying different, simple and easy science experiments. That doubled my energy to explain them the same concept using different ingredients found in our home. This helps our children to become good at thinking and observing.

    Science Behind Shaving Cream Rain Clouds

    Encourage your kids to ask questions and discuss with them about the experiment. The following questions might help. 

    How do you make rain clouds with shaving cream?

    Fill the glass cup (about three quarters full) with water. Use generous amount of the shaving foam to create a cloud on top of the water. Let the foam settle a bit. Now drop food colouring into the ‘cloud’.  As your cloud fills up, the food colouring drops will fall down into the water creating a streak of colours giving rain-like effect.

    How do you make a cloud in a jar?

    You can use the shaving cream or foam to create clouds in the glass jar. Just pump the right amount of shaving cream on top of the water in a glass jar.  

    What makes rain fall?

    You can tell your kids that the water is like the air, and the shaving cream represents the clouds. As soon as the clouds get saturated with water, they produce rainfall.

    We only require a few ingredients to set up the density science experiment to learn more about density of various substances.

    This activity is also pretty good to watch for kids. It teaches them more about the density concept and creates a ‘WOW’ factor for them.

    Step 1

    Start by pouring a little amount of oil into a plastic cup until it reaches to one inch length from the bottom line of the cup. Then ask your kid to add a few drops of food colour (any colour of your choice) to the oil in the plastic cup. Mix it nicely using a fork.

    Now ask again to fill the glass cup with water leaving some space (around one inch) from the top edge of the glass cup.

    Let your kid to add the oil and food colour mixture to the water in glass cup. At this point, ask the children to observe carefully “what’s happening when we add oil mixture to the water?”

    Oil and water does not mix up and the food colour drops gradually falls into the water pushing through the oil layer. Here, explain the kids clearly about ‘how density takes its role to push the food colour drops into the water?’

    The amazing part for the kids is that a few minutes later after adding the food colour drops and oil mixture to the water, the food colour drops starts pushing into the water and forming a same gorgeous rain like effect like we observe in the above experiment. Great, isn’t it!? 🙂

    My little ones also observed that the water and oil is not mixed up and they both separated forming a layer. You can explain kids the simple science behind this.

    In between you can ask your kids to predict the changes that are going to happen during the experiment. You can also ask them to record the changes by drawing on a paper like what they see and observe while performing experiment.

    However, just a note that we got struck several times as we did it quickly to understand that it went down before the fun began. Also, food color was more and hence it descended quickly. Finally, we got the trick of adding the solution slowly and allowed it to float on the top. The food color was suspending on the top of the oil.

    Density is the science behind this activity. It is the measure of the weight or mass of an item by measuring the space it occupies (volume).

    Water does not mix with oil as the molecules in the water get attracted within and not with oil molecules. Also, oil is not as dense as water thus causing oil float on the top and makes two individual layers.

    Food colors are another watery substance and hence do not mix up with oil in spite of stirring well.  But you can see the food color becoming small droplets and temporarily float in the oil. Again it is dense when compared to the oil and later on, slowly fall into the water.

    My daughters and I were super excited to do this experiment after watching many videos. We wanted to make our own version of it. The neighborhood chemist was short of the fizzy tablet which delayed our experiment for a while. 

    On a Friday, my husband brought home the long awaited Fizzy tablets. That made us all set to do the lava lamp at home.

    Let’s get into the lava lamp experiment. 

    DIY Homemade Lava Lamp

    Step 1: Pour water in your glass container. Fill just 1/4th of your container. We used regular tea cups. You can choose the size of the container based on your preference. Longer the height of the container, better the effect.

    Step 2: My younger daughter prefers to play with colors, so  I let her add food colors to the water that we already added. You can choose your own color, I liked red and green as they bring out wonderful blobs.

    Step 3: Just to be sure, we stirred the food color & water mixture a bit with a fork. Normally, the food colors get dissolved in water instantly. If you are using powdered food colors, this step might come handy to mix the food color well with the water.

    Step 4: Next, my elder daughter poured oil on top our food color water mixture. Fill up the 3/4 of the container with oil. This is where all the action is going to happen, so it is important to have enough oil to show the blobs clearly. Also be gentle with pouring oil. Let is sit for a few minutes so that all the bubbles would settle down and your kids can clearly see the oil on top of the colored water.

    Step 5: Now we are ready for action. I let my elder daughter to drop the fizzy tablets into the solution that we prepared. The tablet would slowly dive in and reach the colored water at the end. That’s when the fun started. We started seeing beautiful blobs coming out of the water and reaching the top. Seeing the action, my daughter quickly put tablets in all four mixtures that we prepared.

    My daughter got a good idea – what if we see this with black light? Why not? Tisha quickly brought the black light torch and switched it on. The kids started jumping on joy watching the lava lamp in UV light. 

    We were very happy that all turned out well.

    I let the kids enjoy the show for a while. Then I started explaining the science concepts behind the blobs.

    I always prefer to ask questions before explaining the science behind any activity. 

    As a mother of curious girls, we should always encourage our kids to ask as many questions as possible. 

    Here are some of the questions and the suitable answers that you can use to discuss with your little ones.  

    What happens when you make a homemade lava lamp?
    When the Fizzy Tablet added with water, it combines with water and creates carbon dioxide. The released carbon dioxide gas bubbles rise up in the oil while carrying the  food colored water. You should see big blobs initially due to the fastness of this chemical reaction. Eventually, the chemical reaction will slow down and the food colored water comes back down to its original place. 

    Though chemistry plays a major role, the underlying science concept for the blob to come out is density of materials. Density can be defined as amount of material that can be fit into given space. 

    Which is heavier – water or Oil. Why is it heavier?
    Water is heavier than oil. You could do a simple experiment. Measure up 500 ml of water and 500 ml of oil in two similar containers and weigh them up in a kitchen scale. Your kids can visibly see that the water is heavier (in mg / lbs) compared to oil. 

    Water is heavier because the density of water is higher than the oil. In other words, the molecules of water are tightly packed compared to oil. This is why oil floats on top of water. 

    Why does food coloring mix with water and not oil? Why does water and oil not mix?

    When food color is mixed with water, it instantly mixes with water. The concepts work more like magnets. Don’t we remember, the opposite (north and south) poles attract each other? Similarly water particles have negatively charged oxygen and positively charged hydrogen. They both attract each other due to polarity. 

    On the other hand, oil does not have any charge (i.e. no positive or negative charge). That is the reason why it couldn’t mix with water. 
     
    What is meant by fizzing tablets?

    Effervescent tablets / Fizzy tablets are uncoated tablets. They have typical kind of substances that would  instantly react with water (if mixed) and create carbon dioxide as a result of chemical reaction. Do you know, you can create a carbonated liquid just by using fizzy tablets? 

    How does Alka Seltzar affect water and oil?

    Alka Seltzar when mixed with water produces carbon dioxide. The released gas forms a bubble and tries to reach the top as a result we get blobs. 

    What is Alka Seltzer composed of?

    Aspirin, Citric Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate are the components of Alka Seltzer. Actually the sodium bicarbonate and the citric acid what mixes with water and creates carbon dioxide. 

    How do you make a lava lamp without Alka Seltzer?

    There are options to use salt to make a homemade lava lamp. Otherwise you can simply use citric acid with baking soda in 1:2 ratio to substitute Alka Seltzer. 

    Can you make a lava lamp with olive oil?

    Yes, ofcourse, you can use any vegetable oil. All we wanted to show that Oil floats on top of water.

    How much vegetable oil do you put in a lava lamp?

    I prefer to have atleast 3/4 of the container. So for 1 portion of water, I would add 3 portion of oil for a lava lamp. 

    Can you leave lava lamps on all night?

    The original lava lamps are not safe to leave on all night. Because the original lava lamp produces heat and it is not safe to keep the heat rising. On the contrary, the homemade lava lamp eventually will die off after some due as the chemical reaction would stop. i.e. once the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate goes off after the chemical reaction, the blobs will slowly die off. Because, there are no more carbon dioxide produced. And the colored water will come down and settle down with the rest of the water. 

    Are lava lamps supposed to get hot?

    Real lava lamps do get hot.  Typically, you should not use the lava lamp for more than  8 hours at a stretch. 

    Can you touch a lava lamp?

    Real lava lamps are normally hot. So it is not safe to touch a real lava lamp.

    In this review article, I would like to share my personal opinion about the Geomag panels. I have two daughters aged 7 and 4 respectively.     About Geomag panel

     

    This is a toy that contains panels made in plastic, steel non-magnetic balls, and magnetic rods.     This 68 pieces set consist of 24 rods and these are not colored but silver rods. Both the ends of these rods are magnetic representing north and south pole. The 20 steel balls are nonmagnetic. Remaining 24 pieces are the panels which are made up of plastic material and they come in different geometric shapes. These are in different colors and to be precise there are 5 triangles red in color, 12 green triangles, 10 baby blue square panels and 2 blue panels which are larger in size.

    1. Grown kids above age 5 can use this toy to construct simple structures and thereby understand geometry dimensions like height, length, diameters, etc.
    1. Elder kids can construct 3D models and panels giving them a solid shape. Rods and steel balls help them stay fixed. The creativity and logical thinking ability of kids develop and they can master the art of constructing different models. This way it is better than the LEGO block.

    1. With all these activities, kids can develop spatial thinking skill and learn to make different shapes. For instance, they will know the number of sides of a square, triangle, and pentagon. They can relate pentagon and triangle in one way and square and pentagon in another way. So they will become experts in fixing shapes.

    Things to be improved

     

    • Having spoken about the benefits and the best uses, let me also tell you the tough time I faced with the toy. The plastics are not sturdy, but they form the base for fixing the rods. Therefore the plastics break easily which must be considered by Geomag and provide a better quality plastic.
    • However, their magnets are extremely strong that sometimes they disturb getting fixed to the not required part of the construction and makes kid lose interest in the game.
    • The packing can have some boxes for the steel balls as kids find it difficult to deal with the rolling balls.
    • The provider can also consider providing polyhedron shaped balls which will not roll as the steel balls.
    • The polarity of the magnet can be marked to help kids handle them quickly for making their construction easy. But this is not mandatory as it will help kids to learn the polarity better when they test with each rod.

     

    Caution note for adults’

     

    I agree it is a play toy but that does not mean you can allow kids to handle them alone. The small balls cause a choking hazard and monitor kids not to swallow. Similarly, the magnet rods should not be put in the mouth as they may get attracted in the intestine and cause serious health issues. Do not use any broken panels which may hurt kid’s hands.

     

    Finally, make sure not to keep magnets near computers and magnetic media which will cause interruption and lead to malfunction of the systems.
